How is Medicare different from Medicaid?

Answer

The major difference, Medicare is a federal governed program, while Medicaid is a state governed program. Some people are dual eligable for coverage depending on their situaltion.

Medicaid is for low income who are:

  • Pregnant women
  • under the age of 19
  • 65 and over
  • blind
  • disabled
  • nursing home care

You apply for Medicaid at the Sate's Medicaid

Medicare is for people who are:

  • 65 and over
  • any age who have kidney failure or long term kidney disease
  • permanently disabled and cannot work

Medicare is applied for at the local Social Security office.
